Why Falling Behind on Taxes Is More Common Than People Think

Many people assume that falling behind on taxes is rare, but in reality it happens more often than most Canadians realize.
Life events such as job changes, health issues, starting a business, or financial stress can all disrupt someone’s ability to stay organized with their taxes. For self-employed individuals and small business owners, the challenge can be even greater because they are responsible for managing their own bookkeeping and filings.
What often begins as a single missed tax return can gradually turn into several years of unfiled returns.
Over time, the situation can start to feel overwhelming, which causes some people to delay dealing with it even longer. Unfortunately, that delay usually increases the stress because penalties and interest may continue to accumulate.
The good news is that the CRA generally allows taxpayers to bring their filings up to date for the past ten years. Once those returns are prepared and submitted, the situation usually becomes much clearer.
In many cases, the biggest challenge isn’t the tax filings themselves — it’s simply taking the first step to address the issue.
